How to Find the Best Tacos in Rexburg Idaho

One of the BIGGEST questions we have been asked and that we ask ourselves is: where can I find the best tacos in Rexburg? The answer is a bit more complicated: It depends on what you’re looking for.

In all honesty Rexburg has its fair share of bad restaurants, but you may be pleasantly surprised by what it has to offer.

Again, we will be discussing these restaurants in these five categories:

1. Price Range

2. Food Quality/Taste

3. Restaurant Location

4. Restaurant Accommodation

5. Menu Diversity

We will be starting with one of our favorites and working our way down to our least favorite. First up, Taqueria El Rancho.

Taqueria El Rancho

Taqueria El Rancho is a Rexburg legend in our books. It ceases to impress us with their diverse menu, affordable pricing, and flavorful dishes.

1. Price: This restaurant offers the best bang for your buck by giving you 4 tacos for $5. That’s only eighty cents per taco, something that Dave Ramsey would even support!

2. Quality/Taste: Although the price is so affordable, the chefs here do not skimp on the flavor. These tacos are delicious and go great with their green and red sauces. The marinated pork tacos are some of the best.

3. Location: Taqueria El Rancho used to have 2 locations in Rexburg, but have temporarily closed their taco truck due to short staffing. Their sit down restaurant is 2.7 miles from campus with a sister store in Rigby.

4. Accommodation: This location offers takeout as well as a sit down restaurant. Many customers miss being able to sit inside the taco bus when it was open.

5. Diversity: The menu is expansive, offering many different types of authentic Mexican dishes. They even offer cow tongue as one of their meats.

Casa De Ochoa

Casa De Ochoa is located right next to campus and offers quality Spanish food, but many students may recognize the storefront being used as a dance venue Friday nights before the pandemic.

1. Price: This restaurant offers each taco for $2.79.

2. Quality/Taste: Casa De Ochoa’s tacos are juicy and flavorful, and pair great with fresh lime wedges offered with the dish. We can almost guarantee that you’ll be dreaming about their food after trying it.

3. Location: This location is 0.5 miles from campus and is most likely on your way home from school if you live on the west side of campus.

4. Accommodation: Customers are welcome to sit and eat or take their food to go.

5. Diversity: Ochoa’s has a lengthy menu, but only serves authentic Mexican dishes.

The Taco Box

The Taco Box opened earlier this year and has brought a new food item to Rexburg: Burria Tacos.

1. Price: This food truck offers 2 burria-style tacos and broth for $5.99.

2. Quality/Taste: We’re suckers for the burria-style tacos, especially when they are so packed with flavor. The only drawback is that we wish the broth was thicker to scoop more of it onto the taco.

3. Location: This taco truck is 2 miles from campus next to Ray’s car wash.

4. Accommodation: Customers are given buzzers to let them know when their order is ready, and can sit and eat on nearby park benches or in their cars.

5. Diversity: Aside from tacos, The Taco Box also offers quesadillas, chimichangas, and red ramen.

Guerrero’s Mexican Food

Guerrero’s hides right on main street, a few doors down from Melaleuca.

1. Price: Current pricing for two tacos is $8.49.

2. Quality/Taste: Our first look at the chicken taco had us convinced that they’ve re-packaged Taco Bell and passed it off as their own. After trying other meats, it's clear that there is a more hand-made approach. In all honesty, the food tastes like the grill doesn’t get cleaned often.

3. Location: Guerrero’s is 1.1 miles from campus.

4. Accommodation: The business just reported to open their dining room October 22, 2021.

5. Diversity: There is a large menu, even including new vegan options.

Tacos Tepito

Tacos Tepito is also known as ‘the taco bus’ and has been in Rexburg for years. Located right by Dairy Queen, the taco bus has colorful flags everywhere.

1. Price: After recently increasing prices, customers can get 1 taco for $2.00.

2. Quality/Taste: Our taste test this week left us disappointed. The meat tasted like teriyaki spices mixed with a bit of taco seasoning and a hefty pinch of salt.

3. Location: This taco spot is located 2.1 miles from the BYU-Idaho campus.

4. Accommodation: Due to the novelty of a ‘taco bus,’ the only place to eat is while standing or in a car.

5. Diversity: Tacos Tepito has a menu on the smaller side, exclusively serving Mexican food.

Gringos Mexican Restaurant

Regrettably, the great location and accommodations do not save Gringos from their lack of taste. This restaurant has their target audience in mind by claiming “Gringos” as their title.

1. Price: Gringos sells a 2-taco plate with rice and beans for $9.10.

2. Quality/Taste: The carne asada tacos are more flavorful than the chicken and sweet pork tacos, however, the level of seasoning is about a fourth of a run-of-the-mill taco.

3. Location: This location sits in downtown Rexburg and 1 mile from campus.

4. Accommodation: Gringo’s has a great sit down area with fun decorations and architecture.

5. Diversity:  The menu is diverse, including something for everyone. Not feeling Mexican food, order a cheeseburger!
