If you still crave ice cream during Rexburg winter, this list is for you. If you’re tired of running to McDonald’s or Dairy Queen for ice cream, this list is also for you. If you’re craving something that’s lighter on the stomach, this list is for you too. Needless to say, WE are here for YOU.

This week we reviewed Rexburg’s array of fine frozen treats for you to enjoy. If you are new to Rexburg Idaho Eats or if the headline drew you in, these reviews are limited to strictly non-chain restaurants or restaurants with only a few stores in the area. We’re just tired of pulling up Yelp and seeing Wendy’s as one of the top-rated restaurants in town.

If you aren’t familiar with our rating process, we focus mainly on these qualities:

1. Price Range

2. Food Quality/Taste

3. Restaurant Location

4. Restaurant Accommodation

5. Menu Diversity

First up, the Burg Shakes

The Burg - Righteous Slice

After reading the title, you may think that this blog is outdated. ‘The Burg’ was once a booming burgers and shakes restaurant right across from the I-Center. Rexburg residents were heart-broken to hear about the store closing, but even more excited to hear it’s resurgence back in 2020. Righteous Slice, a local pizzeria, brought back just the Burg’s shakes in their second story seating area.

1. Price: Prices range from the sizes of shake you order, but every order comes with more than enough shake. Because of the high quality ingredients and large portion size, pricing can be around the $5+ range.

2. Quality/Taste: Let’s just say that if this restaurant was anywhere else, they could get away with increasing their prices immensely. The shakes are thick and full of mixed-in fresh fruit, candy, and chocolate, guaranteed to make your mouth water while looking at the menu.

3. Location: Righteous Slice sits just 0.8 miles from campus in the beautiful Hemingway Village, making it very popular and visited frequently.

4. Accommodation: The shop has two levels of seating, with views on Porter Park and the Cove. Inside, the decorations are urban and fun, making it a fun date night.

5. Diversity: Because The Burg shakes are being sold in a pizza shop, customers can also order authentic pizzas and salads at the same time.

Reed’s Dairy

Reed’s Dairy is a local company in the Rexburg and Idaho Falls area. Its products can be found in Great Scotts as ice cream sandwiches, at Soda Vine in milkshakes, or by the scoop in Ammon.

1. Price: Depending on where you go and what menu item you order, prices will vary. We tried out the ice cream sandwiches at Great Scotts, where the regular costs about $2 and the large $4.

2. Quality/Taste: Customers can taste the homemade taste of Reed’s Dairy. The recipe is extra creamy and comes in many different flavor combos.

3. Location: The Great Scotts location sits at an easy1 mile from campus, making it a nice walk from campus.

4. Accommodation: Great Scotts has tables and chairs. See previous post about soda shops for more information on Great Scotts.

5. Diversity: The menu includes many different cookie and ice cream options, and puts customers in an easy place to order a mixed soda drink to accompany their ice cream.

Have you tried Reed’s Dairy ice cream? Which is your favorite flavor?

Kiwi Loco

Kiwi Loco is a local family-owned business that has expanded to 8 locations around eastern Idaho. Instead of ice cream, they sell self-serve frozen yogurt.

1. Price: Customers pay per ounce, which really racks up quickly. Luckily, the store hosts frequent deal days throughout the semester where prices can drop as low as $3.00 for a filled cup of fro-yo.

2. Quality/Taste: This option is lighter on the stomach compared to traditional ice cream. Every order is made by you, making it completely customizable. In all honesty, the Dole Whip flavor is one our personal favorite flavors.

3. Location: This yogurt shop is located 0.7 miles from campus at Hemingway Village.

4. Accommodation: The shop is set up as a social place with couches and tables set up for customers to mingle and socialize. With all the activities hosted in Hemingway Village and in Kiwi Loco, the shop is a frequent stop for first dates and girls’ nights.

5. Diversity: The 10 different flavors are switched out from time to time, with favorites re-appearing frequently. With all the toppings offered, we’re certain that no two fro-yo cups have ever been the same!

G’s Dairy Delights

G’s Dairy Delights is a shop located by the Paul Mitchell School and offers a unique grouping of foods.

1.Price: Different orders range from $1.75 for a teeeeeeeny scoop, $9.00 for a banana split, and $11.00 for a whole pint. The plus size is that they offer FREE samples.

2. Quality/Taste: G’s Dairy has some high quality ice cream. Although chocolate is a big chunk of our diet, our personal favorite is the maple nut ice cream. It is a perfect balance of nuttiness and sweetness that just melts in your mouth. (apart from it being just a frozen substance)

3. Location: About 1.3 miles from campus, this shop is nestled in a neighborhood of community housing.

4. Accommodation: This ice cream shop has several tables and chairs, and even offers basic groceries that you can run in and grab if needed.

5. Diversity: Not only can you purchase ice cream and groceries at G’s Dairy, customers can also order mixed drinks, grilled cheeses, and soup.

Solei

We wanted to include an on-campus option for those mid-day study sessions, celebratory moments, and random chocolate cravings.

1. Price: Prices range anywhere from $2.00-4.00.

2. Quality/Taste: The gelati-style ice cream means a little goes a long way. THe belgian chocolate is one of the most popular flavors and delivers a rich chocolate flavor that reminds us of Costco’s infamous chocolate cake.

3. Location: Solei is an on campus ice cream shop located on the first floor of the MC across from the bowling alley.

4. Accommodation: Solei is set up to order and go, but tables, chairs, and couches line the walls.

5. Diversity: Solei shared the same kitchen as a smoothie and pizza shop, offering a three course meal in one place.
